5 Tips to Improve your Reading skill if you didn't get the score you need.

Updated: May 19, 2023

Have you already Taken a CELPIP Prep course and didn't get the Exam score you wanted?

No amount of test preparation is as good as extensive and intensive study of the English language itself. Learning what types of questions you will see in the Reading Test is not the same as developing a good English vocabulary.

What strategies can a CELPIP Prep course teach you?

  1. Become familiar with the 4 reading sections

  2. Understand meaning from context strategies

  3. Eliminate wrong answers strategy

  4. Skimming and Scanning strategies to answer questions

What can't a CELPIP Prep course teach you?

  1. Vocabulary development

  2. Improve your Skimming and Scanning ability (perhaps just a little)

  3. Improve your general reading ability

5 important Tips to improve your reading for the next CELPIP exam:

  1. Set up a daily reading study schedule.

  2. Use a vocabulary journal. The vocabulary journal should include the following for each new word:

    1. Definition(s) of the new word

    2. Example sentences for each definition of new word

    3. Synonyms (words that mean the same)

    4. Antonyms ( words that mean the opposite)

  3. Buy online study materials such as "CELPIP Accelerate" from Paragon which provides study materials that you can use daily, from vocabulary building exercises to reading strategies to improve your test responses. These are a great option to add to your daily study routine. Please check my blog for "5 good places to find CELPIP materials": tutorki.ca/post/5-good-places-to-find-celpip-materials.

  4. Study each reading very carefully. Don't just check the answers

    1. Research why you have wrong answers

    2. Make sure you understand the main idea of the passage and the main idea of each paragraph

    3. write all new vocabulary in your vocabulary journal.

  5. Read a variety of texts daily and try to comprehend the meaning without a dictionary. You may then open your dictionary and check the meaning of new words. Then add the new words to your vocabulary journal. Choose texts that are interesting to you.

In summary, you must put in daily effort in order to improve. It takes time but you can get the score you want.
