How to Improve your Listening Long-Term to get the CELPIP score you want.

Updated: May 19, 2023

This blog is for students who will spend at least several months improving their Listening before they take the test again.

Have you taken the exam and didn't get the listening score you wanted? Maybe you already took a CELPIP class or maybe you already hired a private tutor and still didn't get the score you needed on the CELPIP Listening exam.

Now you need to spend time improving your listening. This will require improving your vocabulary and having lots of listening input. This blog gives you a way to study for the Listening exam so you improve your listening and get the score you need.

Set up a schedule and be sure you study when you are busy

You should have a weekly schedule. For example, do 2 or 3 listening tasks per day. We are all busy with work and family commitments so you must fit listening into your busy schedule.

Buy CELPIP Listening materials

You are going to take the CELPIP Exam so you should buy CELPIP study materials. See my blog post: 5 good places to find CELPIP materials. Many students buy CELPIP study materials from Paragon, the CELPIP exam producers, but you can also buy from Amazon.com which has an excellent selection.

Research and analyze Listening Tasks

  • Make sure you understand the main idea of the listening task.

  • Analyze the script to understand all the main points talked about in the listening.

  • Analyze the script so that you know the answers to all the listening task questions and why you have incorrect answers.

  • You must also learn all the new vocabulary so you should have a Vocabulary journal. Please see my blog post called: "Improving your Vocabulary for the CELPIP Exam".

Listen to fun and interesting materials also

You will be more likely to listen if it's interesting. I suggest listening to ESL Friends on YouTube. There are many other choices. You could also listen to How I met your mother. For other interesting ways to practice listening please check out the YouTube video "Fun Ways to Develop your English proficiency". This video is sponsored by Paragon Testing, the company that makes the test. When listening to interesting materials you should do both "Intensive Listening", and "Extensive Listening":

  • Intensive Listening - Listen to a short Video clip of not more than 30 seconds and analyze and imitate to improve your listening and pronunciation. Focus on the words being stressed in the short clip or focus on short chunks of spoken English. To see a video on understanding spoken English please listen to a Video from Keith at English Speaking Success: "How to understand Fast English"

  • Extensive Listening- Listen for fun just to hear more English.

Sign up for English classes at an English school in your city

I live in Vancouver, Canada. My school "ELS Vancouver" has morning classes in speaking and listening. The previous school I worked at "St. Giles Vancouver" has General English Classes starting at 9:45 am.

Do you have other questions about the CELPIP or would you like to have a private tutor?
