Updated: May 19, 2023

Learning Vocabulary takes Time

Learning vocabulary is probably one of the most time-consuming of all the tasks necessary to score well on the exam. There are many ways to improve your vocabulary but each way takes a long time.

5 Vocabulary Learning Tips

Follow these 5 tips and over time your vocabulary will improve, and you will be able to use a variety of words in all parts of the exam: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and listening.

#1 Keep a Vocabulary Journal

Your vocabulary journal should have the following for each new word:

  1. Definition(s) of the word. Add the definition of the word which will be the same as the word was used in the text you just read.

  2. Example Sentences. It is important to add example sentences so you can understand the context of the word ( context = all the words surrounding the word you are learning).

  3. Synonyms - Words that have the same meaning should be added to the entry of your new word . Some of these words may also be new words. Then you must also add them to your journal as a separate entry!

  4. Antonyms - Words that have opposite meanings can also be part of the entry of the new word.

#3 Learn Vocabulary in context.

You shouldn't write just any sentence. Write a sentence with the word that relates to your real life. You will remember it much better this way. In other words, try to make a

#5 Read from a variety of sources

Reading shows you the same vocabulary again and again, and if you see the vocabulary in a text that is interesting to you; it will help you remember.

I read an article that said you have to use a word 16 times before you really start remembering it. I'm not sure if this is true. But it does tell you that reviewing vocabulary is very important.
